How to calculate the cost of a mural
Most muralists price a wall by its area. Measure the width and height, multiply them to get square metres or square feet, and multiply the area by your rate. Then add the costs that don’t grow with the wall.
Mural price = wall area × rate + materials + access + travel + design
- Wall area × rate
- Your base price. Rates vary a lot by market and experience; set yours so it pays for your working days, not just the paint.
- Materials
- Paint, primer, rollers, spray cans, masking and a protective varnish. The Paint Calculator estimates the paint for your design.
- Access
- Lifts, scaffolding or ladders, plus permits and safety gear. On tall walls this can be a large share of the budget.
- Travel
- Transport, accommodation and daily expenses for projects outside your city.
- Design
- Sketches, revisions and the final design file. Many artists charge for it separately or take it as the first payment.
Example: a 12 × 4 m wall (about 40 × 13 ft) is 48 m². At $120 per m² the base price is $5,760. Add the lift, materials and travel, and you have the total for your proposal.
Round the result, compare it with what you charged for similar walls, and keep a margin for surprises such as extra primer or a rainy day.
What affects mural pricing
Two walls of the same size can cost very different amounts. These are the factors a client should see reflected in your price.
| Factor | How it changes the price |
|---|---|
| Size | A larger wall costs more in total, but often less per m² or ft². |
| Complexity | Detailed, realistic or many-colour designs take longer than flat shapes and lettering. |
| Surface | Rough brick, old plaster or metal need cleaning, repairs and primer before you paint. |
| Height and access | Anything above ladder height needs a lift or scaffolding and extra time for safety. |
| Indoor or outdoor | Outdoor murals need weather-resistant paint, varnish and dry days; indoor work depends on the venue’s hours. |
| Timeline | Rush deadlines, night shifts or painting around a busy venue raise the price. |
| Usage rights | Using the artwork in ads, merchandise or campaigns is usually licensed on top of the painting fee. |
What to include in a mural proposal
A clear proposal answers the client’s questions before they ask them. Mural Quote puts all of this on one A4 page:
- Your name, logo and contacts
- The client, the project name and the location
- Wall dimensions and the total area
- A preview of the design
- Technique, paint and materials
- Price, tax and the total
- Timeline: start date, duration and completion
- Payment schedule, for example 50 / 50 or 30 / 30 / 40
- How long the offer is valid, a disclaimer and signatures
Send the PDF with a short message, agree on changes before work starts, and ask the client to sign and return it with the first payment. For large or public projects, add a separate contract that covers insurance and permits.
